We're in week two of summer camp and I'm amazed at how happy it makes me to drop and pick up my kids. It's not because they irritate me and I want them out of my hair. It's because they LOVE summer camp!
Summer Camp Memories
When I was 10, I first attended to a summer day camp. The first four weeks of an eight-week camp programme were signed up. I recall crying on the last day of camp, begging my mum to sign me up for the last four week session. My brother and two sisters and I went to that summer day camp for almost a decade. We were virtually always two in camp, guarding the family name.
Camp memories
My first summer camp experience sparked a lifetime passion for day camps. I spent three summers as a camper, two as a CIT, and eight as a camp counsellor. I was a general counsellor for a few years, managed the cheerleading and gymnastics programmes for another season, and then co-directed the waterfront swim programme (while my brother was the Co-Director of the boating program). The camp offered weekly overnights and business parties on Saturdays and Sundays, which I was lucky enough to work at. I spent 14 summers at the same camp, sometimes daily. Those were some of my favourite summers.
Summer camp shaped my life. I had my first “real” kiss and several summer crushes. I met my best friend Lisa during camp, and we are still friends. At camp, I met my six-year roommate. And I met my spouse at camp. Because camp was a couple towns away from my hometown, I liked getting away from my school pals and reinventing myself with my summer friends. When I resigned my first job after college, the same summer camp helped me fill the void as I looked for a new employment.
My Kids at Camp
Unsurprisingly, I was overjoyed to finally enrol my kid in her first summer camp this year. In reality, I signed her for a summer camp for kids in January after doing extensive research. My husband and I chose about a month before the summer programme started to enrol our four-year-old.
My kids are always excited to start their day. Some days they are ready to depart before 7 a.m. (summer camp starts at 9 a.m.). There have been no morning conflicts, and when I pick them up, they are full of stories about their day's adventures, many of which remind me of my own camp days. She started singing “Boom Chicka Boom” last week. She brought her first friendship bracelet home yesterday. My kids are sweating from running, inspired by all the art they see, and teaching me the latest yoga positions. They also swim twice daily and embark on weekly field excursions with our summer programmes. Clearly, these are the many reasons I like dropping kids off every day.
On the way home from camp one day, I asked my kid what his favourite part was. “My group has a girl named Carrie. “I adore.” So begins...
